Pretty aromas of lilac, white peach, wild herbs and lime zest interplay in the glass, creating a stunning mosaic of aromas. Lemon and lime zest with passion fruit and crushed chalk give the palate a balance between fruit and minerality. The wine finishes with bright and fresh acidity.
The 2019 Lagone is a soft, fruity Maremma red to drink now and over the next handful of years. A burst of sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and new leather lends energy to this tasty, mid-weight red. Best of all, the 2019 should be a terrific value.
A deep set of red plums and berries with some fine tobacco leaf and savory herbs, mineral and porcini. Juicy and intense on the palate with lots of chalky, nicely chewy tannins and a juicy finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.
Notes of citrus marmalade, fig and potpourri, followed by a touch of baking spices. Focused and concentrated palate with pleasing acidity. Good length in the subtle smoky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.
Best Buy. This wine is both serious and immediately enjoyable at the same time. The grapes were sourced from four different vineyard sites, each giving a unique profile to the wine. Together they shine as a whole in this wine, with aromas of mixed fresh apples, crushed stones, lemon rind and freshly picked flowers. The palate is layered and nuanced, and so much is going on that you might have to take a breath. Driven by minerality on the palate and supported by fresh and baked pears, apples and citrus, this is a stellar wine.
Packed with kirsch, the 2020 Barbera D'Alba Vigna Vecchia Scarrone has another gear, noted with lavender and black pepper. On the palate, it has a supple, silky mouthfeel, with blackberry, black cherry, crushed stones, and a floral perfume through the finish, as well as mineral persistence and ripe sweet tannins. Drink 2025-2035.
The 2018 Barolo Castiglione is bright, fresh and delineated. Crushed red berry fruit, white pepper, chalk, mint and rose petal all run through this gorgeous, sculpted Barolo. The purity of the fruit and overall energy here are captivating. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years. It's a gorgeous wine in the making.
